  • Dr Paul Taylor

    Dr Taylor is an experienced spinal surgeon. Paul has extensive training in both orthopaedic and neurosurgical spine surgery, both gained in Australia and internationally.

    Alongside Paul’s surgical experience he has had an exciting journey through joining the British Army as a Paratrooper and being deployed during the Rwandan massacre in 1994. Before the Australian Army then recruited him to command the Parachute Surgical Team. Which allowed him to gain citizenship and stay in Perth, his home ever since.

    This is an episode that will open your eyes to a new perspective of spine surgery and how significant having spinal surgery really is. We discuss information and perspectives that are rarely available in the format of open conversation with a surgeon.

  • DR Michael Kern

    Michael was born and grew up in Neckarsulm, a small town in Southern Germany. Michael undertook post fellowship training in spine surgery, paediatric and epilepsy surgery at the Westmead Hospitals in Sydney. He specialises in surgery for brain tumours using the most advanced intraoperative guidance and imaging technologies.

    He strongly believes in the benefit of a multidisciplinary approach to treatment of spine and brain diseases. He has built a network and closely works with neurosurgical and orthopaedic colleagues, neurointerventional and pain specialists, oncologists, physicians, physiotherapists, exercise physiologists and clinical psychologists.

    After recording this episode, I had feelings of excitement for what’s to come within this surgical space and the changes patients will experience. It’s always such a refreshing reminder talking to specialists who value the work they do and constantly look to make positive and profound changes. In all areas such as research, patient care, new techniques, patient education and support. Overall, there is a huge amount of value everyone can gain from listening to our conversation.

    Originally from the USA, Allie has over a decade of experience in the private healthcare sector which spans across corporate GP and private hospital settings. She has a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a postgraduate degree in Healthcare Management.

    Allie played an integral communication role in a local private hospital’s Covid Command Centre during the pandemic and in addition, generated a multimillion-dollar profit for the hospital in revitalising a GP education program.

    Allie is the product lead and product owner for Vacant Beds.

    Liz Behjat is the State Manager WA at ACCPA (Aged & Community Care Providers Association). Prior to commencing in her current role as ACCPA State Manager in WA, Liz Behjat spent eight years as a member of the Legislative Council in Western Australia and served in the former Liberal government.  Liz is also a Board Member of Palliative Care WA.

    Allie and Liz were behind the “Vacant Bed” initiative that launched one year ago in WA, and has made significant impact to bridging gaps for patients and creating efficiency for medical staff. With the hopes that this initiative can be implemented in other states across Australia.

  • Sara David - Living Child Inc.

    Sara is the founding CEO of Living Child Inc. Sara is one of a kind. My conversation with Sara left me humbled. The work Sara has done is no short of incredible.

    In 2020, Sara was made a Member of the Order of Australia for humanitarian work as a midwife. She is a Paul Harris Fellow for humanitarian work and Curtin Alumni Global Impact award winner.

    Together, with her team of volunteer Living Child legends, they trek into the remote villages of Papua New Guinea. Where they aim to reduce the maternal and infant death-rate by providing training, visual teaching aids and birthing kits to midwives and Village Birth Attendants working in remote areas.
